Default White Smoke Coming Out Of Exhaust

Hello Everyone,

Every once in a great while when I start my engine, white smoke comes out of my exhaust pipe for about a minute or less and then disappears. My car idles fine, I don't have any acceleration issues and is very responsive when I gun it.

I'd appreciate any thoughts you may have.

How many miles on the car and are you losing any oil?

Coming and going fast it sounds like condensate.

If you are getting billowing clouds of white smoke that usually means you are burning coolant, and could indicate a blown head gasket

183k and I used to lose oil. I did notice I had a valve gasket leak so I took care of that the other week and did an oil change this past weekend. I checked the oil level and it is still full.

Thanks for your input. Someone mentioned that to me as well. Is that something I can do and, if so, do you have any instructions on how I can do it? I just replaced my valve gasket and spark plug tube seals the other week as I did have a leak.

What sort of leak are you talking about? Oil? Valve cover deals with Oil.

Are you loosing coolant mysteriously? You know that combustion produces water and before the exhaust gets warm the water condenses in the exhaust and is things heat up the steam (white smoke) puffs are normal.

So look for other signs like loss of coolant, bubbles in coolant before chasing a fix.

Head gasket is the next layer of sandwich underneath the valve-train.

Thank you for your response, Salim. I was losing oil and that was when I discovered the bad valve gasket and one bad spark plug tube seal, so I replaced them. I'm not losing coolant but I will check and monitor it. Thanks again.

Apparently this is normal on the LS500. I wonder if the Tundra with the same basic engine does this?
Next time I am in my dealer service dept. I am going to try to talk to a mechanic and get his opinion on this. I’m wondering if it is due to the turbos, the intercoolers, or the exhaust system design.
I suppose it’s no problem, but I’m still curious as to why.

White smoke - coolant. Blue smoke - oil. Brief blow of white smoke in cold weather is usually just condensate from the water vapor in exhaust.
