Default Can it be OCV?

I am moving this post to a new thread. People can weigh in and I will gladly move it back if the conclusion is that it is a OCV problem.

My son and his divorce had me giving up my 2002 rx300 for almost a year now, and he calls everytime he runs across an issue. First started with engine idle, but usually didn't last long and would start to run fine.
yesterday it would not go into reverse and would only stay in second gear.
Yep, started digging here for answers, Many thanks to all that have shared seems like a real challenge to solve by any method, dealer or DIY. I prefer to do my own work, but a tranny job is not what I want to do.
So the cheapest one first seems to be the VVT change and filter cleaning.
I'll post what outcome I end up with that solves the tranny issue of no overdrive and rough idle, can't really call it rough idle it is like the throttle is stuck and will not rev up the engine. it is sporadic, but now for sure work is necessary.
I'm not getting codes for the VVT, only got one code P0765 and it reads the Solenoid D. but the CEL and VSC along with the trac light is now on, and no codes for them makes me wonder.
Saw the thread about the ECM, and read about the replacing only working for a day then codes and symptoms returned.
I'm really hoping the VVT is the real issue.
But I am skeptical, like I said it is the cheapest and fairly easy to do.

Again, many thanks for all the posts, it's been a big help in seeing the whole picture without the costly trial and error part swapping.
