Navigation update for 2001 RX300?
The dealer indicated that they have a 2004 update available for approximately $250. I found a Version 5.1 2006 gen 2&3 update for approximately $240 and would like to confirm if this is compatible with my 2001 RX300. The seller says that is is but I'd like to confirm. In addition, does this update disc stay in the dvd unit or is it simply installed then removed?
I appreciate any input you can give.
Thanks,
Mike

Welcome to CL, mrmaw!
Ask your local Lexus dealer for the proper part number of the update for YOUR car. While the gen 2&3 update can probably be read by your gen 1 system, only the map data (and maybe the POI's) will be read. You will not have access to any additonal features than those available in your current system - IF it works at all.
And, yes, the disc remains in your nav unit - and before you ask, no, you can't copy it. That is a very sticky point of law, and can be VERY expensive. Just enjoy!

The RX300 started at Gen 2 in 2001 and later got Gen 3 (not sure when). Even the 2004 RX330 was still Gen 3; Gen 4 didn't come to the RX until 2005.
The 2/3 update disc should work in your 2001 RX.

I have a 2001 RX300 and have upgraded once to what the book says " map based on 2003 edition of Denso, etc" What is the latest version I can run. The first update was a total waste of money, IMO !
