Updating the NAV on an older car
I am close to closing a deal on a 2011 RX450h fwd. One of the question my wife has is how much is it to actually replace the map on the NAV so it has the most up to date ones on it? We travel on several new roads, so she would prefer to have the latest roads on there. Is it going to be $300 like a few people had said before?

The latest maps on USB key have a discounted cost of $169 at Sewell. You'll have to ask your dealer how much it will cost to then have them perform the work to do the upgrade - I bet it's well less than an hour of time. Unfortunately, since Lexus (and other mgfrs) have gone to use of hard disk navigation, it's no longer a "swap the DVD in the trunk" sort of change, and it's been reported on the boards here that a Lexus service PC has to be attached up to the vehicle to finish the job.
Good luck on your decision and welcome to CL.

Mine was $277 installed at the Dealer. They do it all, nothing to buy prior to the install. I would wait another month or so, I believe a newer version is getting ready to be released.

Like some others have said, no matter where you get the key, a dealer has to plug it into his computer and connect to your car for it to work. It's a one use key and he (dealer) connects to a Lexus main frame somewhere in the cloud. Here's a thought prior to spending the money. Go to your dealer and ask to see a new one on the lot. Look to see if the roads in question are on that one and not on yours. Other than the map, there is usually no other change. For the price, one can buy a really nice one from COSTCO with unlimited upgrades (to have in the glove box just in case ). I'm getting myself one for Xmas.

There are very, very little changes from one issue to the next, for the most part it is a waste of money. As someone else said go to the dealer and check out a few destinations to see if it is worth it, chances are it won't be.

Had my 2010 RX updated at the dealership earlier this year. Yep, it was around $275 to have it done. Several of the maps here in central Ohio were outdated so the update was a big deal. The biggest improvement was with how the sound system operates. Using an ipod loaded with music was a real pain before the update. After the update scrolling was much improved which again had nothing to do with the maps. Not sure if the 2011's had the ipod scrolling issue.

I received an email from Sewell's indicating that V12.1 (2012?) is going to be available in the first week of Oct. You might want to make sure you get that new version.
