Paranoid New 450h - Extra Oil Change Necessary ?
I was wondering if there is any benefit in getting an "extra" oil change performed after say about 1000 or 2000 miles. Just slightly paranoid and want to make sure my 450h lasts as long as possible ... I have read that new engines "bed-in" and sometimes small pieces of metal can appear in the oil during this stage? Is this correct, or am I living in the past ?

I bought a 2010 RX350 last November, drove it sparingly until my wife and I left for a two month vacation. I drove from central TX all the way to the west coast, then north to Seattle when the odo was 8,600 miles. I was going into Canada and wouldn't be back to US dealer until well over 12,000 miles so I had the oil change and 10,000 service done at Seattle dealer. Absolutely no issues when they did the service. In todays environment why waste good money changing the oil at 1,000 miles? I would trust Toyota/Lexus engineering more than your seat of the pants engineering. Change it if you want, it's your money to waste.

I am old school so at 2000 miles I changed the oil and filter myself. I have not come up on the 10k yet and it is getting close to one year since I did the oil change. So at one year regardless of milage I will be getting it changed. Peace for my OCD mind and it didn't cost that much, I believe it was $50 doing it myself.

Maybe one little shaving, and I mean little, and it was in the filter. At least the filter was doing it's job. Nothing on the drain plug which I believe is magnetized. I felt better anyway. Next one is on Lexus.

I'm not sure about Toyota/ Lexus cars, but the claim is that Honda uses a "special" break-in oil and people should not change it at 1,000 miles, but wait until the maintenance minder says so, at ~10K (for the Fit).

I went back and forth on this a while back, finally someone sended a oil sample to the lab and determine that all Toyota Lexus brand synthetic oil have a high moly content that is usually found in break in oil. So if you use Toyota Lexus brand synthetic oil, you dont need to worry about the break in oil.
Regardless, in that case, an additional oil change at 1-2K isn't necessary, then.
