Default Oil changes - every 10,000 miles? Even the first??

Hi all,

As we know, the 2019 Lexus ES calls for oil changes every 10,000 miles, inclusive of the first oil change. I spoke with the service tech at the local Lexus dealer, and he said he wouldn't feel doing an earlier oil change (at, say, 5,000 miles) would provide any additional benefit. The light weight of the oil and the full synthetic blend being the reasons the oil can/should last much longer.

How do you all feel about waiting 10,000 miles for your car's first oil change? And then every 10k after that?

I wonder even if the oil is okay for 10k miles, is the filter still doing its job at that point. Im on the fence - willl probably pay to change it at 5k. Worst case scenario is i waste $100. On our RX, Im changing it every 7k or so.

I don't log 10k a year so my change is by the calendar and I change my own oil. At the end of a year and say, 7k, the oil looks very clean so I'm good with yearly. However, my first FREE oil change will be around 5k then yearly... On my 2013 I had it changed for free at 3k... Probably unnecessary with the modern engines, but years ago it was get the "break-in" oil out with a fresh change. Back then it was after about 1000 miles but that was dino oil.

And Mike, you don't have to pay for an earlier change...

I changed mine at 5,000 miles and than will do every 10,000 miles after. Might be overkill but I take my five quart jug of Mobil 1 and $5 Toyota oil filter bought on line to my local Toyota dealership who charges me $25 labor. Total cost $53. The main reason is Lexus does not use Mobil 1. My local Service manager told me the brand and can not remember but it is not a major brand. I always take my Mobil 1 to the oil change. It is at Walmart for $23 and in the Spring and fall Exxon runs a $12 rebate. Scan your receipt and all done on line.

I think most manufacturers recommend it when necessary. The Corvette Z51 required an oil change at 500 miles after break-in was complete. The Camaro ZL1 gets an oil change at 500 also and diff fluid at 1500 miles I think. The Mercedes C63 AMG also gets diff fluid after break-in as well, I think 1500 miles.

I think they'd tell us to do it sooner if needed

My cars are usually leased so I follow the manufacturer's schedule. On recent Lexus models that is 10,000 miles for the first oil change. Never had a problem. If I were going to keep the car beyond 100,000 miles, I might do the first change sooner just for comfort. Fit on modern engines and modern oil are much different than when I was young.

I have a mechanical engineering degree, and one of my concentrations is in engine design.

The main reason why we feel it is not required (or even beneficial) to do the first oil change early is because of the way engines are manufactured. Years back, the engine block and associated moving parts were not as "clean" of burrs and chips as they are now. Running the engine during the first 1000 miles or so would help to smooth things out, knock off the burrs, and clean things up. All of these materials would end up in the oil, so it was good to get it out of there.

With today's production processes, the tolerances are much tighter and the engines are remarkably clean and free from burrs and chips, so the original oil in the car does not have the extra job of picking up and removing all of this junk. Not to mention that today's oil, particularly synthetic, is so much more advanced.

It certainly doesn't hurt to do it early, so if it makes you feel better, then go for it, but I don't personally see the value in it.

I do my oil in my cars once a year. For us, that's about every 8k miles. If we drove more, I would change it at the manufacturer recommended 10k intervals.

I couldn't agree more. Exactly how I handle things. Very good post...

I'm just a sample size of one, but I purchased a 2007 ES new and changed the oil every 10,000 miles using a high quality synthetic and OEM filter. My son has the car as it approaches 300,000 miles and the engine is just fine. I also changed the tranny fluid every100,000 miles even though Toyota/Lexus states it's lifetime fluid. I have 2022 ES300h and I'll continue to change the oil every 10k.

There is the proof. I will go by what the manufacturer of my vehicle (Lexus) and oil (Mobil) says which is 10,000 miles.
I have much more confidence in them than anybody on this forum that is giving their opinion.

I will change every 5k miles, oil is cheap and engines are expensive. Keep trusting the manufacturer…. The DI engines are not the same as older engines and 10k is pushed by CAFE and competition.

you realize that 2GR-FE engine is completely different and is not direct injection? Apples and oranges again…

Hybrids are a bit different... the engine takes long to warm up. Also they hold very little oil total. So all the more reason to change every 5k.

When I had my 300h, i changed the oil at 600 miles for the first time. Care Care Nut (Master Toyota tech) said he has seen the Toyota 4 cylinders have high oil consumption later in life when people have done their first oil change at 10k because the engine spent the first 10k of its life basically sanding its cylinder walls down with the micro particles in suspension from a brand new engine build.

Us 5k OCI guys might be wrong... but we also may be right. it takes us $40 to find out.

First change after 3,000 miles then every 5-6,000 miles or 1 year, whichever comes, usually the 1 year, as we don’t drive all that much anymore.
Minor expense preventive maintenance and also great negotiation point at sale time, reflecting and demonstrating how well your car was thought of and cared for by its owner.
