Rx 330 2004
I need a new catalytic converter for my 04 RX 330. The mechanic told me I shouldn't use after market parts (Im looking at Eastern, Magna Flow and Catco) because they won't last and quoted me $830 for parts and labor.
Two questions:
Is the quote within the price you all have paid for the same service
Is their any truth to the after market part comment he made
Any additional information would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

Rare for these to go bad. How many miles on your RX? Are you sure it needs a new CAT? Were you getting a check engine light (CEL) with a specific code? Which one was bad -- the front ones at the manifold or the rear one before the muffler? You might try a local Toyota dealership for a second quote if there is one in your area you trust. The part would be the same as for a Toyota Highlander.
As for third-party parts, I cannot speak for the brands you mention, but I have found that many are made to the same quality and specs as OEM. What you are looking for are "direct fit" items and not universal. The Magnaflow you mentioned, as an example, has an OEM grade product line. Cost might be half of what the Lexus part might run you.

Another place for you to look for parts would be rockauto.com if you plan on purchasing the part yourself and have someone install for you. For example:

Also, some aftermarket parts are better than stock, I am thinking of the K&N air filter. I run this air filter in all my vehicles. I also used aftermarket sway bar end links - much better than stock

After market catalytic converter`s are not near as good as the factory ones. Not as much precious metals inside to last as long. Usually why so much cheaper.
