Default 2004 Transmission Slipping

I know that the ES and RX transmissions had a fair share of problems with the shift pattern. I know that there are software upgrades.

I have searched the forum but haven't really found any incidents of the transmission failing or slipping.

Recently I have noticed that when the transmission is shifting between gears, it is taking longer to change gears...the actual gear change. The transmission is shifting at the proper time (rpm) but it's just taking a while to shift between gears. There also is no change in rpm's like the transmission is slipping.

However, when the car is shifting between second and third it seems to jerk, lose power and then surge into gear. The car has 71,000 miles and this is the first time that I'm experiencing this issue.

I have the car going in tomorrow to have the transmission flushed and filled with new Type IV fluid.

My question is do you think that there is an issue with the transmission or is the surging and bucking that has been discussed or do you think that the transmission is slipping?

You didn't state it, but did you do a transmisison fluid level check? One with the engine warm and idling? I am hoping you don't have issues this early but it sure sounds like your ATF level is low.

71K is a long way to go without changing tranny fluid, that may also be a issue. Be sure to use a synthetic fluid for the change & have them flush out ALL the old fluid too.
Also when it gets cold out the tranny acts different till it gets warm but new synthetic fluid should take care of most of that.

I did check the fluid and it's at the proper level. It's still red and doesn't have a burnt smell.

I don't really understand Lexus/Toyota. If you read the service manual, there is no set time to replace the transmission fluid. So since it's synthetic, I would have to assume that it lasts longer than conventional fluid.

They are doing a complete flush of the fluid and replacing it with Toyota Type IV fluid.

Since I haven't heard any replies that suggest that others have had transmission failures, I'm a little happier with that.

I've changed the tranny fluid type IV three times. Usually I do every 30K miles. I have 107K miles (2WD) and it doesnt slip at all. I am told the Type IV fluid is NOT synthetic.

Toyotas fluid is not synthetic as of yet, so look for a synthetic that meets the Type IV that is required. There is at least one out there. Buy it & have your service place use it.

I picked the RX up this evening. It seems pretty much the same. Maybe a little more firm shifts.

So this is my first RX. I just thought that it was a little loud or the tires. Well, it turns out that there is a bad wheel bearing front and rear. I can't believe that I've had so many issues with this RX and with only 71,000 miles.

3 catalytic converters, now wheel bearings.

I have been reading on this board ever since we bought our 2005 330. I don't believe that I can make the statement that "almost every 330, 350 owners are having the same problem". I will say that this transmission shifts softer than that in my Acura or BMW but that is a design function. Luxury car owners usually want a smooth ride, smooth shift, and arrive comfortably. Having a snappy shift, like say a BMW 3 series, might go against the luxury ride.

I would say, get your transmission flush, drive the car and enjoy it.
