valve cover gaskets...
...new to lexus...got a RX 330 in very good condition...a 2005 with 89K...taking it in for the belt/water pump service...all good...gotta love lexus! Really a comfortable vehicle!
My question: the mechanic said:
...your valve cover gaskets are leaking, should be replaced. Given its age, the could have cracks or just become brittle...is this a good thing to do? or is it overkill
...your power steering pump looks like there might be leaking and that the gasket should be replaced...they'll wipe it down and see if its serious...
When mechanics say these things, I think they're trying to get more work and sell goods or services that may not be required...
I plan on keeping this car for awhile...I've heard with good care they'll go 200K, at the rate I drive,that could take another 10 years

You may be correct on both accounts about work being suggested which is not required. Hopefully, they will actually show you what is wrong instead of you just having to take their word for it.
The valve cover leaking has been discussed before, however, it is a rare item here at CL. Like many topics you might have about your RX, searching the forums will lead to a great deal of information. Such as:

The power steering fluid, it is actually a DEXRON ATF (see Owner's Manual), is not noted on any service maintenance schedule and is largely forgotten about. As a result, when one does have a peak under the engine cover where this is located it is usually in a poor state. If you search you will find a number of threads talking about easy methods to exchange/pump this out to get some fresh fluids in there. The old fluid may be a cause of other problems such as power steering rack failures, so it is not something to have a look at. Not sure about the pump itself leaking.
If you are good at DIY projects, there are many things you can take on yourself to make sure you have lots of enjoyable miles in your new ride.

I replaced the valve cover gaskets on my 2004. They started leaking at about 50,000 miles/7 years. I did the front first since it was easy. I lived with the rear for a couple of years since it requires removal of the upper intake manifold to replace. I finally did it when I got tired of the smell of warm oil and the mess the leaking oil was making of the engine and front suspension. Oil consumption was never really an issue, maybe 8 ounces between oil changes.
