Why is my gas mileage so bad?
Sorry if this has been posted already, but I'm an 18 year old and new to cars.
I bought a 1999 Lexus RX300 with 174,000 miles on it.
What's been bothering me is the fact the computer reads 11.5 mpg - 13 mpg and a full tank of Octane 93 would last me only a week (mostly city driving, around 100-120 miles)
But I do have the A/C on all the time, does that factor in?
I live in Northern Virginia and I drove to Queens, NY (277 miles) on a full tank of gas though and made it successfully with about 1/4 of the tank left (averaging 23-25 mpg) highway from what the computer read.
So is my fuel economy normal? & should I consider putting in a fuel additive? Thank you.

Your highway mileage sounds perfect! But, the city is a different story. It may just be your driving behavior but even then it's low. I say it's your driving behavior because your highway mpg is good, so i can't think of why your city mpg is so low, if everything sounds as though it's in great condition. How do you normally drive?
In my case: I redline quite a bit and drive aggressive in the city and highway. I can constantly get 18-19 driving it hard in the city. If I drive closer to "normal" i can get 19.8. LOL
On the highway: I can usually get about 23mpg going +-85mph. If I follow speed limit and go 65 I can get way more, I've been able to get 28 for one whole tank following the speed limit.

As for the A/C, yes it can affect mpg. BUT... not to a significant degree.
On the highway it's cheaper to run the A/C than opening the windows. Because going 65+ with open windows causes drag and it kills the aerodynamics.
