I used the K&N drop in before going to the K&N cold air intake. Never had this problem with either. I would recommend the battery disconnect, as was mentioned a few posts above.

Filters are there for a reason: To keep crap out of your engine.
"High flow" or "performance" air filter = more air passing through = more crap passing through with it
Do your own research as to why K&N and other "performance" air filters are bad for your engine. Stick with OEM.

I've seen full review and testing of K&N vs OEM and yes the OEM blocked much more particles than the K&N
Also I've read a review of K&N vs AFE Pro Dry S vs AFE the oiling filter and in the end the K&N was the worst in filtering, but highest in capacity. So I decided to swap it out to AFE
