Default Input needed: Bmw zf trans

Trying to start to gather parts to start my manual transmission swap but am still undecided on which transmission I want to use. I have narrowed it down to either use the 5 speed bmw zf trans with a bellhousing adapter, or just stick with a w58. The car is a 1jz sc300. Im looking at the zf trans as I feel as it will be better in the long run. I plan on occasionally drifting the car but it is primarily my daily driver. I know a member on here completed the swap but it dates years back. Does anybody have any info the zf transmission swap, what parts I would still be able to use, etc. Please let me know and thanks

Moving this to the Performance and Modification section where it belongs.

If I am not mistaken there is another thread about BMW trans on that section too.

If you can make the ZF trans I would go for it over the weak w58 any day of the week. How much power are you putting down or plan on putting down? If you don't push it the w58 could work for a while but the second you start to get friendly with that thing over 400hp its gone. As for drifting I always see second gear go out. My friend has blown through 3 W58's with a stock GE motor with headers and a welded diff. Why not just go CD009 for probably the same price and be solid? Collins makes an adapter and I'm sure the 350z trans is a lot cheaper and more readily available than the ZF trans. Just my 2 cents.

+1 on the CD009 trans... Besides Getrag this would be one of the best options.

AR5 is another cheaper and relatively easy swap now that Driftmotion has parts on the shelf for it.

Lastly, theres nothing wrong with a dinosaur R154 swap for making under 700rwhp.

There is also the Tremec T56 Magnum. Very similar to but different from the Tremec TR6060 6-speed made for high horsepower and torque OEM applications. It's being recognized as a V160 replacement at significantly less cost (though still expensive) and rated for *more* torque at 700ft-lbs minimum. It's also brand new and readily available on the aftermarket with parts support which cannot be said about the V160/161 now. The CD009 trans swap is cheaper I believe.

An R154 is a fine choice even in a DD unless you are chasing very high horsepower. A converted AR5 is very similar with some differences.

I've looked at the BMW Getrag and BMW ZF threads but I think those are still being tinkered with only in custom setups against JZ engines. I could be wrong.
