Not much else fails unless you short an injector driver or a 5V driver on the ecu board, but that doesn't happen by itself generally you have to be messing with the wiring while the ecu is powered up, and you wouldn't do that in good conscience generally speaking.
I want to say for most of these repairs it will just be replacing the caps and cleaning the surface traces of any leaked material. if its any more than that its time for a newer ecu then and inspect and possibly replace caps before they fail and it should last a long time.

I appreciate all of the input. I'm going to do what I do best (procrastinate) and repair the ECU myself eventually. I'm just stuck with that...stupid...Explorer! Once I get rid of that clunker, I'll be a free man.

Driftmotion offers a rebuild of the 1UZ ecu for $80. I am thinking seriously of doing this. My car seems to have varying power levels, weird shifting patterns, and an odd idle sometimes. I know the previous owner had not had this done and the car sat in a garage for months sometimes not driven.

I was eyeing that listing and finally decided to remove it from my watch list. There are many alternatives. I don't really like buying services on eBay, either.
