Transmission swap maybe
So I worked a guys car yesterday and he has a 96 SC300 stock 5speed w58, and I have a 99 SC300 with the a340e. Now I've been looking and researching parts and how to do the r154 swap and I have pretty much all the info I needed, but I met him yesterday and he told me that he does not want the 5 speed and he would rather have an auto.
Now he has already done stuff to his car so he's not looking at trading, and I like my car too, but rather just swap our transmissions and just pay for labor at a shop somewhere. His tranny has about 100,000 on it, and mine has about 179,000. he said he is fine with that. So now I'm just looking at what you guys would reccomend me to do as far as just swapping and test driving. Just swapping to a r154, or how hard it would be to go from the w58 for now to a r154 later.

I'd swap just for the point of having the pedals and start with the w58.. if your sc300 if stock or not pushing a tons of boost you should be fine, if you do end up getting a little crazy with it grab an r154 and driveshaft (maybe just the front half, you'd have to read up on it) swap it out and sell the w58, your a340e is almost good enough to call it scrap metal not much resell demand unless someone wanted their 4 spd auto to become a 5spd auto. Paying a shop to do that swap is going to be big bucks though, a lot of labour hours

on your side it would be easy, on his side not so much he would need a harness for an auto as well as an ecu, which he couldnt get from you since ur vvti engine. it would be a little more complicated than its worth i think.

I have an extra 97 sc300 auto ecu. My car was a 97 auto that I converted to 5 speed. If you have a donor car to swap everything over that super nice clutch lines and all. You will get a check engine light from not having your auto tranny hooked up cause you can't run his ecu cause his is non vvti. Everything mechanically speaking is a direct swap. Give him your pedals and you takes his. Now electronically you will have to jump your nss to start the car. The 5 speed car I would buy a auto harness and use that. Honestly the guy with the 5 speed should just sell it and get a auto as 5 speed car are worth a bit more and you could source a r154 and be done with it since you will probably spend a grip on labor fees at a shop to swap both cars.

It could be a weekend job if you have all the parts it's actually not that hard to take the auto tranny out and put the 5 speed in. I don't know how different the w58 is in comparsion to the r154 because I have only installed the r154 in my car. If you have any question feel free to pm me.
