just hollowing out the cats ain't going to do much in the sound department, if anything you will make it raspier since all you are creating is turbulence. It will, however, make it louder, but not my a lot.
i run a cherry bomb and obx mufflers in the back, i tried just running the mufflers, but there was so much resonance that it shook the car, this is three inch pipes. now it sounds like a supra
Will anything bad happen if you just cut off the main cat and just weld piping in it's place?
Nothing bad will happen with the exception of smelly exhaust and possibly some smoke. The car will run fine without the cat, though. If you are OBDII you may get a CEL depending on which cats you gut/delete.
I have clips with just straight pipes and with just 1 vibrant ultra quiet resonator. neither are actually quiet, lemme know if u want to hear that..

Gutted cats will do virtually nothing regarding sound. A muffler change/delete is the single best way to make your car louder.
