Default Engine ECU Facts

My mechanic told me that the engine ecu was bad after trying to determine why my car would not start. In Nov. 2010 he replaced my fuel pump after experiencing the same symptoms ...hard crank but no start..

Says ecu is $1200. Love this car but would upgrade to '97 if found. I want to be careful about money spent. I would like some cosmetic mods in the future. Right now 25 mph above the speed limit is max.

Looking for you guys to give me some advice....

Thankx

DO NOT SPEND $1200 ON AN ECU !!!!

you can get a used one for WAY less than that, or you can have yours repaired (with warranty and all) for way less than that.

BTW, I just sold a good used ecu from a '92 for less than $100 shipped

Used or rebuilt. Check with your local auto parts store, I bet they can get you a rebuilt unit.

auto&truck electronics 866-983-6688. autoecu.com
They did mine 8-10-09 lifetime warranty.
I think they charge $150 now.
Good luck

Check the classifieds on here and you can get one for nearly 1/10th of the cost you mechanic told you!

And you can swap it out yourself ... I'd recommend you go to another mechanic, it sounds like yours is trying to screw you over. Thats the problem with a lot of mechanics nowadays. They don't care about repeat business, they just want to rip you off and don't care about you coming back

Hey Guys, thanks for the encouragement. I did an extensive search and found a warranted rebuild for $160. Does anyone know the part number as mine has not been removed yet and I want to be sure that I get the right part............ " 92, 6cyl, auto, no Cali. emission, jt8jz. The dealer offered a reman. for $1090 but would not give up the part #.

Thanks for the help!

I do see faulty ecu's from time to time.... usually when vehicles are towed to my work we find a faulty ckp sensor or a bad fuse~ GET A SECOND OPINION. Pay the diag with a definition of diagnostics done and the recomendations for repairs in writing on the recipt. Take it to another repair facility play stupid and see what they find. I reccomend the dealer.... or me in Colorado.

If it is something simple found at the second facility bring the recipt for the correct repair to the first and get your money back.

?? Why does the shop say it is a bad ecu?? What led them to believe that it was a ecu problem?

What is ckp sensor? I think I'm gonna take your advice an send it to the dealer for a 2nd opinion.

Found out what Crank Position Sensor was. Thanks also troubleshooting info to determine if fuel pump, or sensor is the issue or the ecu itself. I've also found 2 different ecu part #'s so I guess I will have to verify the actual part # before I order.

92 - 93 ecu = 89661 - 24312
or
92 = 869661 - 24310

FYI All.... Verify your part for exact replacement.

Thanks Yall!

Default Got Troubles

Well....! Car is still down. Exact rebuilt ecu was replaced and some luck. They said that the ecu did help but still needs exploration. When the ecu was pulled there was saturation of water on the carpet on the passenger side. engine is getting gas now but timing must be off. I gave a few more days to check it out. Guess I gonna have to search for next mechanic.

It is a qualified repair facility. Been in business for more than 25 years. Family facility and has keep my car in good shape after my bumper to bumper lexus warranty expired years ago. I trust the work and always get fair pricing. Just considering other options at this point.

I would love to get a 97+ but have held on to my whip for sentimental reasons. I considered a change more that 5 years ago. I was gonna trade for a bmw but could not stand to part with the car. Bought my wife the bimmer. Just want my whip fixed.......Still love this car!

Any LexTech geeks in the Phila, PA area?????????????

Hey Guys,
Car is still down. Replaced ecu with remanufactured one. Got fuel, got spark, efi = good. Still no start. Replaced cap and rotor, repositioned distributor up/ back, checked timing belt. All ok. Still no fire. Sending the ecu back for a replacement. SHOULD this actualy just be a plug and play piece? Looking for a second opinion now. I asked about a mechanic referral on the post but no reply yet. One more try folks and then I'll have to make some decisions. I've had this car for 16 years. Classes status is right around the corner, flaws and all!

Can compression be checked without car running. He told me that the car did start but died right out. Just like the day of my initial trouble.
