Default Removing lower oil pan on VVT-i SC300? Any tips?

Guys,

I have a leak coming from my lower oil pan and need to remove it to put new gasket in there. It looks like a nightmare to get to because of the subframe, or whatever that it that runs horizontally across it. Is it possible to get it out without removing this? Any tips? Not sure if the oil pan is in the same spot on the VVTi and non-VVTi motors...?

Thanks,
Jonny

Remove the small black pan first, then you'll see more bolts for the aluminum piece of the pan. Be careful trying to pry it out with a flathead screwdriver it can crack

Small black pan I'm not following you. Which small black pan?

I would raise the motor or take it out completely. When i swapped my oil pans to the GTE block, it was such a biatch to get off of my old block. I was prying with a 2 feet screw driver, and it wouldn't budge. I thought i left a bolt bolted somewhere. In the end i had to use multiple screw drivers then a pry bar to get that shiat off. All that and the block was out of the car!!!! I'm telling you this to give an idea how hard it's gonna be on the car, if it's even possible. Good luck.

Hey Jonny, you might try looking around on Club NA-T for info on this. One frequent topic is drilling for the oil return line. Seems to me the lower one is definitely do-able (it's been some time, but IIRC, it did not REQUIRE the subframe be removed), but the upper pan required MAJOR effort to the point you might as well pull the engine. If you are just doing the lower(which you stated) it shouldnt be too hard.

Thank you guys for all your responses - they are greatly appreciated. As long as I can get access to all the bolts from underneath, I think it should be manageable just to lower it enough to scrape the old gasket off and apply some new FIPG. Thanks again,
Jonny

I am having this same issue. The pan right above the subframe has a small leak. I just don't see any way of doing this with the motor in the car because the pickup tube and strainer would prevent any lateral movement to try and work the pan out.

I'd hate to pull the motor.

BUT if it is possible to replace with the motor in the car I might even pay a shop with a lift to do it so my back stays pain free.

With the 98+ VVTi JZ engine....has anyone gotten the pan out and put it back with the motor in the car and touching nothing else?

I don't want the shop to BS me so I need to know.
