Rebuild trans?

Default Rebuild trans?

I need the rear main seal replaced on my '92 SC 400. My mechanic quoted me around $600. I asked how much to do the RMS and rebuild the trans and he said about $1300. My trans seems mostly ok, but it does clunk into gear pretty loudly when going from P to R and it sometimes makes a loud noise and seems to slip a little in cold weather. Since they have to pull the trans to replace the RMS I'm wondering if I should just spend the extra cash and have them rebuild the trans while they're at it.

Any thoughts?

What type of clunking sound? maybe your tranny bushings are just worn out.... You can try to do a tranny/filter flush first if that helps. Thats about $60 if you DIY.

Yea, I agree man. The symptoms your describing are not all that bad man. The cold slippage could subside with a good tranny flush and good fluid. The clunk as well with a new trans mount ($100ish) and really easy to do. I don't know that I would go whole hog into the tranny rebuild biz. Maybe your mech is great with a A340/ maybe not...

Thanks for the replies.

It's just kind of a "thunk" and what seems like an excessive lurch when I shift from P to R. The slippage in cold weather seems to be related to the overdrive. Sometimes when I accelerate there's a brief but loud low pitched rumble that shakes the whole car. It doesn't seem to do it when I turn off the overdrive.

You'd be amazed what a new rubber tranny mount might do. Won't affect slippage, but all the other stuff more than likely.

Default Go small first with the trans?

I'm a noob that just picked up a 93 SC400. Mechanic says amongst other things, I need a new trans. I have that small whining sound from 5mph-0mph and vice versa. Have the vibrations that increase in the 60-60mph range. It shifts pretty smooth, yet sits around 3k rpm at 80mph. I'm new to the Lex and am used to 2001+ Audis and Infinitis, so I honestly forgot how old engines run. Is 3k normal at 3k rpm?
Should I go with the trans mounts, have them flush trans fluids, etc. It sounds like I may have similar symptoms as what's being talked about in this thread.
