Default Transmission Maintence Questions

Ok so I did a search and found some fantastic info on some of my questions but I still have a few more before I go ahead and change my tranny fluid for the first time in...........well......probably years . The owner before me did little up keep sadly and the tranny oil is black, so now I'm going to drop the pan and replace the following:

35330-30011 STRAINER LIST 46.21 COST 35.28
00295-01281 F.I.P.G.PAN SEALER 8 OZ TUBE LIST 21.85 COST 16.76
35178-30010 GASKET,DRAIN LIST 2.03 COST 1.55
00279-000T4-01 ATF T-IV QT LIST 5.36 COST 4.09 EA X 5

(do I need all of this or not)

Now my question is what if the fluid that is in there now is not T-IV.......what will happen?

Also since I'm dropping my pan how much fluid should I refill it with?

What is the best way to remove the most amount of oil WITHOUT a power flush or a machine of any kind?

Not sure about your specific transmission, but a drain and refill of the pan every 4 or 500 miles until it is 95% or more replaced can be an option (I'm sure you already know that with this method, it will never totally be replaced but eventually will get close). If the transmission calls for T4 fluid it is not a good thing to run it without the friction modifiers required by the Aisin transmission.

Not sure about the strainer on yours, but may be able to clean it.

Also if you have not already bought the FIPG, you can save money using Permatex Ultra Gray ($4 tube at auto store). It has the same 00295-01281 spec. http://www.permatex.ru/pc/exch01.xls

Sorry dude but from what i heard if the fluid is black (google black transmission fluid) and you change it, its gonna brake right away. So basically you gotta keep driving it till it brakes then rebuild or swap in a new tranny.

Im not sure what they originally used in the car since I just got it used a few months ago, but judging by the drain plug it was more than likely type II seeing how that is the symbol on the plug. I just drained it a few days ago and the fluid is a darker shade of black than my car . So since I have changed the fluid I have driven about 120 miles, tomorrow I'm going to drain it again and fill 2 more quarts.

I have the Black FIPG from toyota, but I'm not sure what makes the Orange and the Black different

Funny thing is before I changed the fluid it took about 3k to shift from first to second gear, but now it shifts at 2k and there is no clunking into gear. Now to see if the next change will get the shifting from 2nd to 3rd to better and smoother.

T-II (Toyota 2 ATM) Aisin transmission fluid was replaced by T-IV (T-4). If the stick says T-II then it is the same as the T-IV today you should be okay if they used T-II in the past and it is the Aisin transmission (not sure whether the 97 SC3 had the Aisin)

Some get the Dexron II mixed up with T-II and they are totally different specs.

That link above to the excel file might show you whether the spec for the black stuff is the same as the orange stuff.

Good Luck,

Tim
