Starts in 2nd gear half the time
When i bought the car, i had a flashing OD light that flashed the code for transmission solenoid #2. Car was going from 1st to 3rd, skipping 2nd. So i bought solenoids, pulled the pan, realized i bought the wrong solenoids, and just replaced the filter and gasket instead since i was in there already. Well, no more blinking OD light, but tranny starts in 2nd 5/10 times. It now goes 2nd, 3rd, 4th just as perfect and smooth as i would want it to be. But today for example, 1st gear was there and it went through all the gears perfect. Its only intermittent.
So is this a solenoid issue? Or is this a 'transmission flush needed' issue? Seems that temperature doesn't really affect it, its just random.

i dunno when my car first got 1jz swapped, my 1jz trans would start in 2nd half the time as well, and i ended up toasting the trans after 2days of driving it around.. put in another 1jz trans, same issue.. It turned out being a damaged wire on one of the plugs..

what plug was damaged? Within the tranny or outside of the tranny? I'm wondering if the shop f'd up one of the wires when changing out the trans filter.. Or didn't hook one of them back up correctly...

it was one on the outside, don't remember which one though. but yeah i guess one of those wires could have some damage on it or the plug not pressed in properly.
definetly be careful driving though, my trans didn't last long starting off in such a high gear, i think i burnt up the torque converter.

I've been reading everywhere on here that the SC400 has 2 solenoids in the pan that should be changed, aliga told me there are 3 there, and the lexus dealer told me there are 4 there.
soooo......... 2, 3, or 4?

This is an odd situation. I also had some squeeking from my belt, and it was obnoxious. Well, i pulled the belt off, cleaned the pulleys with brakleen (non-chlorinated), installed a new belt, and wow...
Car now shifts through all gears effortlessly, no sqeek or squeal or noise from the belt, and get this.... no blinking O/D light... wtf
Maybe its a coincidence, but we'll see. It literally drives 100% different immediately after cleaning the pulleys and replacing the belt.
Also something notable: steering reponse and over feel has increased, and throttle response has definately increased as well. All from clean pulleys and a belt...
I'll update if the previous problem persues...

I got a blinking o/d light too.. it will always start offf in 2nd or 3rd most of the time.. slapping the shifter back and forth form 1st to park sometimes help. or turning off and on the car again.. but im going to do a flush on it now. since i got to disconnect the tranny lines to my radiator and take the radiator out, cuz my harmonic balancer just blew apart yesterday and the belt hit the fan and cracked it . hopefully the flush does the trick and ill buy a filter for it.
btw what fluid does the trany take.. dexron mercon 3?

So i'm awaiting some tranny solenoids. I'll see if thats the problem. It still starts in 2nd gear from a complete stop. It will shift to 1st no problem when i put it in 1.
I'll double check wiring and solenoids and filter when i get under the car.

Funny, these things are hard to get the right solenoids for. I am waiting for solenoids, already got a set and had to send them back.
Up to 97 or so, there are 4 solenoids. 2 shift solenoids, 1 lock up solenoid and 1 accumulator backpressure modulation solenoid.

He's very likely sending you the 2 shift solenoids and the lock-up solenoid. That would be my guess.
The 4th solenoid isn't really needed. Go here for more info..
