Help my headlighs just shut off (alternator)
OK! I was driving home and, my headlights just shut off then the battery light, and the ABS light came on in my dash. The next day I opened the hood to replace my battery and, one of the caps on top of the battery was off, and there was no water in the battery.
I replaced the old battery witch was registering 3volts with a new one. The car started up fine, but my headlights are still not working. I still see the battery warning light even though this is a new battery. I then disconnected the negative on the battery to check the alternator. The car just died. I just replaced the alternator about a year ago, but would this cause my headlights not to work. I checked the fuses, there all fine. Can any one help!!! Why would my high beams work, and not my headlights.

Blown fuse under the hood in that black box for the headlights. If you batt light is on and you disconnect the terminal which causes the car to die leads back to your alternator not charging .cheack all alt related relays and fuses if it is a new unit.

Toying means that you take the same fuse from somewhere else in the fuse panel and put it in place of your low beam fuse. The same thing with the relay, but those might not have another similar relay to put in place of it. And if you don't know what a fuse and a relay are you can look in your owners manual. Relays are the larger box looking component. Another reason why your lights just die is because your alternator isn't functioning properly. That is why your battery light is on. It is most likely the rectifier diodes. The computer starts shutting off power sources like your radio ,dash lights,or headlights or any other major source of power. Also make sure to check to see if any battery acid didn't eat threw your wiring harness. Hope that you have a warranty on that alternator. Good luck!!!

I checked the wire harness, and it does look like acid ate some of it away. I replaced both of my headlights and, they work now . Thats crazy that both of them were blown out at the same time. I found a place with the alternator for 55 bucks, so i'll pick that up tomorrow. I hope this solves all my problems. Do you think that battery acid shorted out my system?
