Question Which UZ models have a 5 speed?

Ok i am new to the forum and Im going to be the proud owner of an SC400 in the up coming weeks. I've been meandering around the forum for a while now and i can't find an absolute answer to my question. I hate automatic transmissionsand I am looking for a manual conversion. I'm not going to go with the 300 because I would rather have the two extra cylinders for one, two they 300s are more expensive around here and three after compression loss with daily driving, the six cylinder will have to work harder to pull a very heavy car. ANYWAYS I read up somewhere that some guy from a land down under makes conversion plates for trannies and such and thats all fine and dandy. I haven't been able to find his page however I do know now that several new UZ platform cars have manual trannies as an option. I looked on Lexus of Pembroke pines and searched for a tranny from an SC430 and it gave me a tranny that also works in the sc300 is300 gs300 es300 etc. Does this mean that I can use a JZ tranny and bolt it to the UZ? Does anybody know of a UZ tranny that bolts up?

short answer: none.

I believe Toyota has never put a gearbox behind a V8 off the assembly line...ever.

There are options available, however. Your best bet is to use TTC Performance's JZ/UZ Adapter Plate ($750). This will allow you to bolt any JZ bellhousing to the UZ engine.

Your trans options would be a W58, R154, and V160:

- The W58 (~$250 used) would be safe for a n/a application. Lextreme member Super Runner sells a W58/UZ flywheel for ~$225. Any W58 clutch (push type) would do the trick.

- The R154 (~$250 used) is capable of handling any sensical forced induction project. Super Runner sells an R154/UZ flywheel for ~$325. Any R154 clutch (pull type) would do the trick. The issue witht he R154 is the shifter location. To convert the MKIII Supra R154 to the SC costs an additional $600. To get a Soarer R154 costs $1200 out of the chute.

- The V160 (~$3k used) is capable of handling even non-sensical forced induction projects, with six gears to boot. Quarter Master makes a custom multi-disc clutch for the application at over $1k. A rear end swap is also required since the V160 prefers rear ends in the 3.1-3.2 range and the SC400 (92-97) runs a 3.92 rear end.

-------------------

I am running the R154 swap. I have accumulated a crap load of parts. I am about $2k in the hole right now with upwards of $500 still to spend. I have played my cards very conservatively the entire way: patiently waiting for the best deal out there. To be safe, allow $3-4k for the R154 swap, $2-3k for the W58 swap, and $7-9k for the V160 swap.

ps. a manual gearbox conversion on a Toyota V8 has been done a very countable number of times. The air is rarefied and research becomes your friend. check out my thread as it links to the posts which contain the most critical relevant information to a UZ gearbox conversion.
