Default what is a tailshaft?

what exactly is a tailshaft? I've been researching a70 supra r154 - w58 tranny swaps and I keep coming across the fact that you need a soarer tailshaft because the r154 is shorter.

after searching on CL and google, this is what I've found....
- it's sometimes used interchangably with the front half of the driveshaft.
- it's sometimes used interchangably with the tailshaft housing, which is kinda like a cone-shaped housing at the rear of the tranny, that the shifter mounts to via a 6-bolt rectangular plate.
- it could also be the part that meshes with the splines from the mainshaft at the rear of the transmission and bolts to the driveshaft.

I did my s13 convertible auto-5spd swap myself and I know my transmissions, just not the vocabulary. any clarification will be greatly appreciated.

my whole reason for asking is that I want to compile a definitive list of what's necessary for the swap.

so far I have:
r154 from mk3 supra
bellhousing from 1jz soarer
rear crossmember and mount from 1jz soarer
tailshaft and tailshaft housing (?) from 1jz soarer

thanks in advance.

Negative! The tail shaft that everyone is talking about is the ACTUAL rear end of the R154 transmission that you're researching. The Soarer and the MKIII R154s are VERY different. Biggest difference is the tailshaft... you can find the workaround in the link below. The second thing you're going to need to worry about is the manual vs electronic speed sensors.

The write up you that you're really looking for is here: https://www.clublexus.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=262114

The w58 mounts work so you dont have to search forever to find a soarer mount.

Let me know if you need any assistance... I have both kinds of R154 sitting in my garage collecting dust waiting for some spare time.
