I can't stand the Noise!!! Anyone else?
My '95 SC400 has started making a whining sound from what I believe is one of the upper pulley systems (water pump? tensioner pulley?) It's much much worse when the A/C is on. I just replaced the A/C compressor and dryer - that had no bearing on it. Same noise before and after. Anyone have a similar issue or insight into what this is and how to fix it? Car has 130,000 miles, orig. water pump, timing belt changed at 90K (why oh why didn't they change the water pump then..) Thanks for the input.

Sorry, dont have a resolution for you. But my 95 Maxima seems to have a similar problem. However, when I turn the a/c compressor on(which is hooked up to a switch) the noise gets lower. The noise sounds like a loud whining noise. Kinda like the engine is straining. Almost like cars going to blow up. Its really embarrasing, ppl always ask me wtf is up with my car. :-\...
If you figure out what the problem is, let me know. Maybe i'll take a look at the same thing.
I was also thinking of changing the a/c compressor to see if it stops the noise. Let me know..

I may have the same noise. It's a high-pitched squeeking/worn bearing sort of noise and only happens when the car is in gear (if I put it in neutral, it goes away). And it is not too loud- I only hear it when the car is near a wall and I have my window down, so it reflects off the wall and bounces into the open window.
Such a scenario only happens in the drive-thru lane, so if it wasn't for my addiction to In-and-Out burgers, I may have never noticed it.

Run her 'til she blows
So. We all have problems, but no solutions. Heck, I guess I'll just replace my LCA's and every other bushing and learn to live with the whine until something seizes up! That'll be my definitive diagnostic. I hate whining (not me. The car.). Maybe it's the darn tensioner pulley. Maybe.

To find the culprit spray some WD-40 into the bearing of all pulleys on the car one at a time while the engine is running. One of them will most likely make the noise either go away temporarily or just change the pitch of the squeal depending on how far gone it is.
