Cat removal in SC3? Would it help engine code 28??
Hi, Ive been having my check engine light come on about every 3 weeks, and everytime it would come out as code 28 (rear main oxygen sensor). Also, under heavy acceleration/revving, my exhaust would smell very bad and my cabin will fill up with this bad smell (kind of like rotting eggs). Does this mean my rear main o2 sensor is bad? or my cat is bad?
Would removing my cat and replacing it with a straight-pipe fix this problem? Also, how much would this cost? I know I have alot of questions, but please, I need to know this. Thank you
Thanks again
PS. I have a 92 SC300 5speed

well, if your 02 sensor is bad, it's possible that the ECU is miscalculating something which would screw you up.
BUT
the funky smell in the cabin makes me think mid pipe. I had the midpipe on my SC go -- it sounded all farty and nasty -- kinda like flow masters or something. I'd check your exhaust and make sure it's not leaking, or making strange noises. Once you do that, I'd check the 02 sensor.

Id put money down that its both. The malfunctioning O2 sensor will cause your car to run rich and in turn that will cause your cats to blow out or melt. id definately replace the O2 and get the cats checked out. If you dont have to deal w/ smog, id just get an O2 sensor bypass and get an aftermarket midpipe.

thanks for your responses, but heres the thing, I thought the rear main o2 sensor is just there to detect problems with your cats. also, i dont have to deal with smog inspection so ill do anything i need to fix this, even if its a tad bit illegal . i would love to get an o2 sensor bypass, but do they make any for OBD1 cars?
thanks guys

i too get that same rotte smell when i gun it! it leave that funny smell inside the cabin.
one guy told me that its mostly likely the catalytic......but i dont want to replace that....too much money!
heck just pay a mechanic 200 bones in order to pass yr car fr smog or something.......hehe.
i believe a brand new catty is around 300 bucks.......
