LX owners...What octane are you using?
#2
Use 91. 87 or better is required for the '03. For the '98-02, 91 is "required." It's all in the owner's manual. I get about 2mpg better w/ 91 vs 87 (hilly terrain, 2500 ft alt.) since you don't need to step on the accelerator as much to get the rig moving. 2mpg is over 10% better economy, yet the price of 91 is only 20 cents/gallon more (with gas at $3/gal for 87, that's only 6.6% additional cost for 10%+ gain in fuel economy...a good deal!)

I believe the debated answer to that is the fact that by burning the higher octane, the engine performs supposedly performs at it's best and dare I say, quieter?
I read Jim's post and honestly had no idea that the 98-02 models required premium, yikes! I'm glad we bought an '03.

I travel lots of highway mileage a few times I have recorded 20 mpg on High Octane gas, Exxon , Chevron or Shell.
As soon as the new LX570 arrive in Florida I will be a candidate to purchase one.
On the other hand I owned a 2003 Land Cruiser for three years and always used Regular with no problem .
I got gun shy with the LX. Go figure !!!!!

Other countries also often have a different octane rating system. I'm not saying 95 is impossible to get because I can even get 115 octane locally. Just that you have to compare apples to apples.
Lexus "recommends" premium fuel (91 or greater) for 98-02 but they also say you can run regular 87 without damage but with reduced performance.

87
I have a 99 that I purchased 4 years ago (used obviously) and have used nothing but 87 since. The guy that I purchased it from said he used 87 since his ownership...and that is what a friend who owned a Land Cruiser told me to use. My car has 118k plus miles and still rides like new.

87, 89, 91... whatever is the mood of the day. The engine does not care that much, just slightly higher gas consumption with the 87 and slightly smoother revs with the 91.

Unfortunately thanks to my friends at CARB, those of us in CA are limited to 91 octane for super unleaded. You can find racing gas (100 octane) but that's overkill and really expensive.
We stick to 91 octane. It seems to give a little bit better mileage and it's the recommended octane per Toyota/Lexus.
