I don't know if it is that bad coming from a dealer. I'm guessing that could easily be a 3 and a half hour job at $100 per hour. Of course a good independent will do it faster and with a lower labor charge.
And since you are providing your own plugs and they can't make a profit off parts, they're probably bumping up the labor.

I have a local guy who only works on Lexus/Toyota who will be getting all my non dealer business. He has done work on my LS400 in the past. I recommend finding one and getting a quote.

I wish changing the plugs in an LS was easy, but it is pretty involved (removing lots of stuff to get to the plugs and tight spaces), hence the extra labor.
You don't really NEED to replace them except every 100k - 120k miles. Sooner than that is for the dealer to comply with emission regulations.
I doubt you'll notice any difference in performance. IMHO
