LS 460 - DIY Oil Change
#18
Lead Lap
1) People need to learn the difference between LEXUS FACTORY WARRANTY REQUIREMENTS and "oil requirements."
2) IF you are under warranty, Lexus does not care whether you used SYNTHETIC or not. And Lexus "Synthetic Blend" is NOT "Synthetic" oil. Not by a country mile.
3) LEXUS FACTORY WARRANTY REQUIREMENTS on oil change intervals is every 5000 miles or every 6 (six) months, whichever comes FIRST.
4) If you are no longer covered by a LEXUS (Factory) warranty - Extended or not - then IF you are using FULL SYNTHETIC oil, like NAPA (made by Valvoline) or Mobil 1 or Valvoline or whatever, a good idea is every 6 months or every 7500 miles, whichever comes first.
5) You get to choose which weight of oil works best in your particular Lexus. NORMALLY (Except for only 1 model year) the correct weight is a choice of SAE 0W-20 or 5W-20. Do NOT let someone bully you into using a particular type of oil based on their own prejudices. In Southern climates, where we RARELY see freezing temperatures, or it still gets VERY warm during the summer months, 0W-20 is just fine. Two Georgia Lexus "Elite" dealers recommend this weight of oil for their customers' LS460 oil changes.
If you are using Lexus-branded "Synthetic Blend" oil, then you need to stick to every 6 months or every 5000 miles, whichever comes first.
Please keep in mind, ON THIS PARTICULAR QUESTION, you WILL wind up getting a lot of non-sensical, unknowing, well-intended but still totally incorrect answers on this. Do some home work. The facts are all out there. Even some Lexus "Service Advisers" don't always provide the correct response. An EXCELLENT SOURCE of quality information is your own Owner's Manual ! A copy can be found and downloaded for free over the web. ALL of this information - and more - can be there.
And if all else fails, always remember a mantra for Club Lexus ........
"NEVER LET FACTS GET IN THE WAY OF A GOOD STORY !"
