LS460 Vais Tech instal
Hi friends! I searched the Audio/Video forum, the DIY thread and the whole LS460 forum and couldn't find anything...
I installed the Vais tech in my 3rd gen gs430 and it was actually really quick and easy.
Before I start ripping my ls apart though, I wanted to see if anyone has done this and had any "tips or tricks".
Thanks!

it's not that hard. you just need to access back of radio. trivial to take out the 2 side panels, take out the littpe trim right in front of the center arm rest. 2 bolts for the shift plate on the driver side, pop it upward. pull the ashtray 45 degrees outward.
2 bolts holding the radio, one on each side, 45 degrees pointing up (look up from the bottom to see). carefully take them out using extension, 10mm. then find leverage to pop out the radio unit. necessary harness behind the radio
if you are doing ml+, you will need to take out the nav screen unit on top too. 2 8mm bolts bottom of the nav unit after you take out the radio

Rominl has the steps down. Only thing I would suggest is to wrap a towel around the gear shifter after removing the **** and shift plate, since pulling the radio out will require you to pull it all the way until it hits the shaft. Also, might also want to use the shift lock release to put the car in neutral to give you a little more space to pull the radio out.
When I installed my ML+, I dropped the 2 nav screws, so be sure to catch the screws (use a towel or something to drape underneath). To pull the nav out, there are clips that go up the left and ride side, and I found it easier to pop these by getting a fingernail behind the bezel around the air vents and pulling. The plug that goes to the clock is very short, so be sure to detach that first before pulling too far.

this is great info. not just for me but anyone looking to do this. It does sound very similiar to the gs install, so that's good.
Also! and maybe I should search, I did the "navi hack" over ride on my gs... Again, super simple. Does anyone know if this works on my ls also?
Thanks all!

yea, I wish my dad was more handy too. Haha. I "taught" myself all this stuff.
So far it was actually REALLY easy. Like really really easy. I just got stuck here.
Romin! you mentioned it wasn't necassary to take out the "2 side panels"... what are you referring to?
I have these plastic side panels that appear to need to come out next.
I also have two "side" panels that are like leather and part of the dash. I would ASSUME these don't need to come out, but I can't find the bolts holding in the radio and wonder if they are behind those...

no i said it's trivial to take out the 2 panels, which from the picture you have them out already. that's the first step. if you didn't take them out, there is no way you can take out the shift plate. i am talking about the leather panels, and they are not part of the dash
you can see the bolts now, one on each side. stick your head close to the floor and look up about 45 degrees
