LS460 Engine Air filter
#2
you just need to remove the silver cover on the engine, it is without bults just pull it from the corners one by one softly
then you will find two small black boxes (left and right) of the engine.
open them by pulling the silver(metal/chrome) holders
and tadaaaa
there are your engine filters

I know for my Harley K&N sells a recharge kit for the air filter. There's a solvent to clean the filter and an oil spray to apply to the cleaned filter. I have no idea if its appropriate to use on the Lexus filter.

I just looked it up online. I will definitely replace my air filters with K&N. They will definitely be the last air filters I buy for this car, especially since I already have the recharge kit for my Harley anyway!
Here is a link for the recharge kit (I have the 99-5000).

I had forgotten about this thread. I never ordered the K&N filters for my Lexus. I did some subsequent reading and you have to be careful not to use too much spray on the filter. Apparently some people had problems with it clogging up the mass air flow sensor. I still do use it for my Harley though.

Personally, I don't run K&Ns in any of my cars these days...except the Harley, which sees *maybe* 600-800 miles per year on sunny days.
In fact I just replaced the filter in my 911 with a $27 factory spec paper replacement (Mahle) as the Porsche part# is $44. Same paper filter.
When it's time to replace the filters on my LS, I'll either go with Toyota parts or factory spec paper replacement.
There's no upside to be gained from a K&N and as others have said, over-oiling could affect the mass air sensor. Running a K&N type filter with no oil will flow more air, but will also filter less dirt, which is something none of us want with our 460s...it's all in that post. No reason to be modding the airbox either.

I use these: http://www.ebay.com/itm/AF5786-Engin...dTFCc3&vxp=mtr
Theyre only about 8 bucks apiece. If you insist on Genuine Toyota parts, they can be had for about 45 bucks for two on Ebay as well.
As for K&N, I can attest that they are not a good choice for day to day street driven vehicles. There are lots of stories, reviews and tests that will make you think twice about using them. Personally, I used them on my F350 diesel back in the day. After a Blackstone Labs oil analysis, they advised me that I had high levels of silica (sand) in my oil. This confirmed reports that K&N filters could increase particles getting past the filters and into the engine. I switched back to paper filters and never had that problem again. The other issues commonly seen with K&N (and other similarily designed filters is failure of MAF sensors due to the oil in the filters.
