Telescopic Steering - working again
It seems to be common for telescopic steering to stop working on older LS. I have a 2004 LS430 with 186K miles. Actually the telescopic retraction has never stopped working, just the automatic tilt and the forward motion were not working. To my surprise my automatic tilt and forward / deployment function started working again. It has not worked for at least 2 years if not more. I have not done anything to the car that would cause this.
Anybody else ever have this happen? I really do enjoy having the automatic tilt feature back. Great not to bang my legs / knees when exiting the car.

When I bought my 01' in December, the tilt motor wasn't tilting, and with a quote of 700.00 + to fix it, that was one of the bargaining points when I closed the deal...
First thing I did was to open up the steering column and find out why it wasn't working. The motor had froze up at some point, so all I did was work it back and forth a few times, and it started operating again, and has been fine ever since.
It seems like these motor assemblies tend to freeze up, if they're drivin too far in any one direction.
I'm not surprised that yours started working again, knowing what I know about them.
Glad to hear it's working again for you.

Disabled my automatic retracting feature shortly after I purchased my car years ago. They generally give problems and are expensive to repair.

They may be expensive to repair (I know i didn't repair mine for over two years), but they are a joy to have working. I really like the tilt away / retract feature. Reminds me that it is a luxury car. And with over 180K miles, I like to be reminded. Turn yours back on and see if you get the same level of joy :-)
