At the end of August 2013, at 119K kms, I had a P0430. Problem was exhaust leak due to gasket failure at the flange on the passenger side of the Y-pipe split. Very easy to see if you run the engine while on a lift (don't forget to disable air suspension ECU if you have one).

Had an independent shop do the work for $250. You have to drop both sides of the Y-pipe to repair it, so they replaced the bolts/gaskets on both sides at the same time. I verified catalyst efficiency in Techstream after, everything is perfect.

Passenger side gasket part # 17451-50020, driver side 90917-06078. See http://lexus.sewellparts.com/oem-cat...S430-2002.html

I also had a metallic clinking sound many months ago. Get under the car and look at the clamps that hold the heat shields onto the pipes. Guaranteed those are rusted out and are loose. Just rip them off, check your pipes for hidden leaks, and replace with a stainless steel worm-drive hose clamp - see http://us.lexusownersclub.com/forums...n-ls430/page-2

Was wondering if anyone removed the heat shield completely? Seems like it causes a lot of problems but is it really necessary.

The first thing I did when I started noticing my noise was remove those y-pipe heat shields. Unfortunately it didn't solve my problem, and after almost 2 years the nemesis of a noise is still present and is louder than ever before. I've gone through everything under the car with a fine tooth comb and cant figure out what it is. Even a half-dozen techs can't figure it out.

Ok, a break in the case. I got a p1354 code a week ago accompanied with missfire codes for cyllindes 2, 4, 6 and 8. VVTi sensor bank 2 was at fault, i changed sensors on both sides so i don't have to pay for labor twice. $370 all together, dealer sensors. While the car was at the shop i askedto check all hoses for degradarion and change them if needed. Mechanic found one hose disconnected, on the driver's side closer to the firewall, he put it back in and called me to pick up the car.
Car drives absolutely beautiful, no more intermittent trembling while sitting at idle, rpm stays at 700-800 depending on load. Shifting from P to R to D is smooth with almost no shift feel.
My guess is both issues had an affect on the rpm and a trembling issue.
