Odd problem with auto folding mirrors

I think I have found the answer to one of the problem with the mirrors. My car is a 2001 LS430. The passenger mirror had trouble folding in and out and would click a lot in the attempt. After taking it apart while on the car, I found that the problem is that the motor that does the turning is not properly held down and can jump up when under load. The nibs that should hold it are too small. I fixed it by using a small bolt through the top of the metal housing to hold it down - and voila! About $800 saved - plus the labor.

My 2004 LS430 driver's side mirror moves too far when starting the car. Any easy fix for this without the $750 price tag. I saw somebody post about turning the auto function off but I'm not sure how this is done or if that would even fix my specific issue. I would be just as happy with the mirrors not moving at all so I don't have to stick my hand out the window everytime I start my car. Thanks for all the help!

When I bought my LS I had the same problem so I keep a can of WD-40 and I spray them every time I change my oil and havnt had an issue even in the winter time they open and close just fine and my LS is an 01 . Just spray some WD into base of it I normall take the red straw and push it in so the spray can lube up all the moving parts once they get a good spray I wipe off any extra and the mirror are good to go. Hope this help you out

Have you tried making the side mirror adjustment after starting the car, and then saving it to one of the memory settings?

folding mirror problem
I had a worse problem with the mirrors on my 04LS.
I rarely used the auto fold feature, not seeing any need for folding a mirror out here in the country.
My passenger mirror, even in the "off" position, would swivel 180 and point out into traffic. My only recourse was to pull over, walk around, and twist the mirror back into place.
I drove around with my mirror duct taped in place because of a broken, posessed motor.
I tried this site, and a few local repair specialists to see if anyone could snip a wire to
defeat the motor. No one seemed to know of any alternative "fix".
At the end of the day, my only solution was a $750 part plus labour.
I wish I could've simply turned the automatic feature off, but it made no difference whatsoever to my "possessed" twisting mirror.

update...my mechanic tried to repair the mirror and spent too much time on it as it drove him crazy. He ended up disconnecting the power fold control wires, now it adjusts fine, only it won't fold automatically anymore. just fine for me since I rarely used the fold function. The detent that stopped the mirror rotation as it unfolded wasn't there anymore and it just kept going. It had been knocked backwards about four times in the parking lot by pedestrians which I think damaged the detent.

What I found on my 01 is that the lubricant they use in the gearing for the folding feature was becoming hard and tacky. The mirrors stop when the motor over amps so with the harder/tacky lubricant it would over amp before the mirrors were fully open or fully closed. I took it apart cleaned out all the gunk and put in a light squirt of silicone. Mirrors work perfect every time.
