Exclamation Rain Sensor

Hi guys, I have searched and could not resolve my rain sensor wipers not working issue. The wipers work in any modes except the AUTO mode, so I clean the sensor and put new tape on the windshield but it still won't wipe. I am afraid I may need a new rain sensor and I just would like some advice before I spend $200 for it.
Is there any relay I need to be aware of regarding the AUTO mode? Am I indeed need a new rain sensor?
By the way the car is 01' LS430 UL. Thanks in advance for any reply.

Did you replace your windshield recently, you might have not gotten the OEM windshield, which in that case your screwed... otherwise you should be able to get a new rain sensor (lot cheaper than a new windshield...

I HATE those automatic wipers. I'd trade sensors with you if I could. I like to decide for myself how often I want the wipers to actuate. Plus, I live close to the coast where there's a lot of sand on the roads which winds up at the wiper/windshield interface. When you turn the wipers on without first cleaning that sand/dirt from the wiper will result in a scarred up windshield after a while.

FWIW some aftermarket windshields do maintain the sensor -- Pinkerton (or whatever) for example, does.

I have the OEM windshield still(it's got that "Lexus" at the corner), and I think the sensor is shot because under the hot sun it would wipe but not in the rain. I guess I will get a new sensor tomorrow and hope there aren't any other things wrong with it...

the sensor should be good, the gel pack may be bad. is your car still under warranty 4yr 50,000?

Thank you guys for all the great infos, the car is 70k miles and I think the sensor is original as well.
I bought the tape(gel pack) first to try if it were a fix. No such luck!! So I bought the sensor and replaced it, right away it worked. Nothing a $200 won't fix I guess...

i just bought a 2005 es 330 and have the same problem--wipers dont work when set in automatic mode. is it likely the sensor? could it be something as simple as a fuse? windshield etc all original in very good condition.

Sorry, but we only diagnose and troubleshoot LS's in this section.

(i would think same exact symptoms would warrant same corrective measures.)
