What are the most common causes of exhaust leaks?
I have a 93 LS400 with 192,000 miles on it, engine is pretty loud, mechanic is telling me that it might be an exhaust leak. Has anyone on here been able to diagnose what is usually the cause, and also what part is usually needed to replace it?

Usual causes are a cracked EGR pipe, rusted flanges on the cats or a blowing Y pipe.
Rest of system is stainless steel and generally reliable.
Any half decent mechanic should be able to pin point the exact cause surprised yours hasn't?

as stated the EGR pipe is very common to leak for early models. the metal is just brittle and cracks over time. it is located above the transmission leading to the passenger side header.
this is for a 95-97 car but it's similar to your 93.

Get it up on the lift... making that much noise should be easy to see holes/cracks in the pipe...
Had that on a 2000 model, where the holes were behind the heat shield and causing it to rattle.

Any pics of the Y-Pipe being blown out?? I think mine has a hole or something down there does. the car isn't really loud or anything but it sounds like leaking exhaust and I have slight hesitation under heavy accel. Im thinking my cat is backed up and the air found a weak spot but nothing too serious or it would sound like a tractor. its only noticeable to car people.
