1991 LS400 Antenna Will go Down but Not Up
Hi,
So I bought a 1991 LS400 a few months ago knowing that the antenna didn't work, and just left it up to get reception.
I figured I'd take a look at it now and I saw that a pink cable was detached from its socket. I stuck it back in and the antenna went down all the way and sounded fine. I figured maybe that was the problem. But then I turned the car ON and the antenna didn't go up. So I had to take out the wire and manually pull the antenna back up.
I did put in an after market stereo, but I bought a wiring harness and it seems that everything is working fine, including reception with the antenna.
Has anyone heard of this problem. Thanks!

This might help. Mine wouldn't properly go up or down when I bought mine. I never listen to the radio so I just disconnected the motor wiring and pushed it down.

Dude, the car is 22 years old. Don't you think that after so many years the antenna needs to be replaced? You can find replacement power mast antennas on eBay for cheap, but a better option would be a fixed antenna, such as a diversity antenna, hidden antenna or even a rubber one.

I've seen the page about fixing the antenna, but because mine went down fine when it reconnected, I figure the issue wasn't mechanical, and perhaps it was electrical. I'll look into getting a fixed one or hidden one. But I figured I'd see if people knew about a potential wiring issue.
I have seen a few discussions about making the old cell phone antenna the radio antenna, but the instructions have all been really vague.
Thanks guys.

Here is a link to the hidden antennas you can buy on eBay, courtesy of Kansas.

Guys. His antenna mast is fine according to his post. Maybe a new mast will fix it but I doubt it. Does the antenna motor go off when you think it should be going up or nothing happens./? My 97 does not work right even after mast replacement so there can be other issues.

Don't know what wine you're asking about seeing how no wine was mentioned. But if you're talking about that irritating noise from the antenna after the car is off, that's normal when it goes down. Hope you weren't trying to ask the original poster cuz his only two posts were in this thread 7 years ago. Maybe he junked the car cuz the antenna didn't go up. Lol. 😉
All the time I've been here I never heard of any electrical problems with the antenna, just the broken mast. But I guess there's a first for everything. I have a fixed antenna on mine from previous owner. Ugly as hell, but so is most of the rest of the car at this point. 😢 🙄

All stations came in perfect anyway, even without an antenna.
