Exhaust designs
I'm soon going to be starting my 5spd drift build on my 92 LS. Curious as to the exhaust system as I see a lot of threads asking about this, though nothing that really suits what I'm thinking of doing. I'm looking for power gains and weight reduction, and obviously cats and the stock catback are huge in weight. Had a few ideas and I was hoping the educated members could chime in.
Cats:
Gutting the cats seems to drop the performance of the 1uz from what I've read here. Now is this because of the now freer flowing expansion chamber and then immediate reduction?
If I put straight pipe sections inside the original cats will this provide any kind of power increase?
Headers:
Does anyone currently make affordable headers for the first gen LS400?
Catback:
I am planning on taking the stock catback and setting up a jig and making my own. Now a few options I was thinking of were a full dual setup with 2.25" piping running a magnaflow x pipe situated in place of the factory Y and 2 mufflers out back.
Another option is utilizing the factory catback to Y section, or making my own, and at the Y run a single 2.5-3" pipe all the way back to a single muffler. This is the best solution for weight, but I'm unsure on the piping diameter when it would merge to a single pipe.
All comments are welcome and appreciated. Thanks in advanced guys!

please search, all your questions have been answered. We even have a couple exhaust design threads, one or two may be linked in the FAQ as well iirc.
cats: no major gains, not even worth straight piping. (gutting causes cavitation and is NEVER recommended!) If yours are dead/clogged, then high flow if you absolutely need ever 2hp gain, or just stock replacements.
headers: affordable? No. One company MAY make them for you on special order, but not for <$700-900.
cat-back: 2.25" dual with x-pipe and mufflers is pretty much the go-to aftermarket setup for most guys. Some run resonators and mufflers (to quiet it down a bit, still way louder than stock), some don't (I didn't. just mufflers).
The magnaflow x-pipe is decent, but if you really want absolute maximum performance and weight reduction, Burn's Stainless will sell you some very nice SS tubing, long-merge y-pipes, and lightweight race-spec stainless mufflers and pre-mufflers.

2.75-3.0" is the right size for a single exhaust setup, 2.25 dual into 2.75-3.0" at the merge.
