'97 LS400. I had to replace the radiator and while replacing the radiator, there seems to be a round circular filter coming off the return line of the transmission. It does not look stock because there are some generic looking hose clamps on the filter lines but I am not certain.

Does anyone else have a filter on the tranny lines near the radiator? Or do you just have straight lines back to the transmission?

I also got a P0770 (shift solenoid E) but the car drives perfect? Shifts perfect? While I was swapping the radiator, the tranny fluid looked surprisingly fresh which means they were probably trying to fix an issue with the tranny or it just got re-built? I'll look to see if the bolts holding the tranny appear to be scarred (indicating removal). This also means that I am not sure if the correct fluid was put back in the tranny? Hmmm....

There are some who have added an in-line filter at this point in the transmission cooling line, but I don't know what they look like.

Thanks. I think the filter is definitely aftermarket. I think I am going to remove it today because it may/may not be clogged. Who knows how long its been on there.

Does anyone have a diagram of the valve body for a 1997 LS400 transmission? I want to see which solenoid is actually the P0770 / Shift Solenoid E.

My transmission was shifting fine, even though I have the P0770 error. As a precaution, I dropped the trans pan, replaced the filter (which didn't look too bad from what I saw), clean the magnets (that didn't look bad either), and was able to get a little over 4 quarts of Toyota ATF in the trans. I need to do one more flush. I also removed 2 solenoids (the 2 that are held in place by 1 10mm bolt) I'm just not sure if one of them is the Shift Solenoid E. I soaked those 2 in PB Blaster for an hour and hooked each one up to 12v and the operated fine.

Drove the car from NY to Atlanta last night (over 800 miles) and it drove perfectly. Averaged right at 25 MPG with a heavy foot . Even though the check engine light came back on 3x during the 800 mile trip, the trans felt fine... Strange. Up hills, down hills, floored the pedal, stop and go... all felt smooth...

I am pretty sure this is the same valve body as the one I have. Which one is "Shift Solenoid E"?

Thanks but I've searched and seen that thread a million times, I even posted in it a few days ago... believe me I have searched. There is only 1 thread that sort of mentions which one is the E solenoid, but his description was contradictory. I am not trying to figure out what the test is, I am just trying to verify which solenoid is actually the E solenoid. All my solenoids sound pretty good when they engage, but I would still like to know which one is actually E.
