Default Tired battery or . . . ?

A couple of times in the last few weeks I've gone ot start my '98, and when I turn the key, the gauges light up, but thats it; no starter or starter sound. But after a couple of more tries turning the key, the car starts normally. My first suspicion would be the battery, which I'm guessing must be at least 3 years old. But it has not triggered the VSC. Has anyone had the battery go without triggering the VSC?

How clean are the cables and terminal posts? You could also go to Autozone and they will test your alternator to see how much load/amp your starter is drawing to the start the car..
