I have a problem with my lexus LS400, 100k,1991!
It takes an unusual time to start! But when I do it in two steps there is no problem!
I mean if I crank for 2,3 seconds and stop cranking and do it again the car starts. Also if the car is on and I turn it off and crank immediately it will start in 2 seconds!!!
I had a complete tune-up recently!!!

You aint gonna like what I am about to tell you, but my best suggestion is to start saving for a new starter, as yours is giving the early indication that it is about to go. Of all the repairs on the LS, the starter is the absolute worse because of it's location. I would start off first by checking all of your wires and connections to the battery but it really sounds like the starter is about to go.

If car only cranks or clicks without starting...then
Try to search in forums about starter // starting problem. U can just change starter's contacts and plunger, check this thread.

In either case that you choose. Getting to that starter is gonna be a pain.

I think trukn1 is reading it wrong ,or i am .
If the starter is turnign over it is fine.
If the engine is not catching to start it is either a fuel ,spark or timing issue.
I recently noticed since i changed my coolant temp sensor my car will always start on the first try using the remote start. Previously when it was cold it would not always catch the first time.
Try that otherwise move on to fuel pressue.

I have an idea, but you probably won't like this one either.

Check your battery voltage, if either it or the alternator are on their way out it could cause slow cranking. Better than a starter though...
