Default Frozen Antennae

Question for you guys in the winter climate. I have a car
that has a power antenna. I like listening to the radio in the mornings and evenings on my drive.

I have noticed the last few days as temps have been in the 20s, or there has been snow, once I turn on the radio, the antenna doesn't come out all the way, presumably it being frozen?

When it is in the 40s, the antenna has been fine.

Do you guys experience this in the winter climates? Is this normal?

Appreciate some feedback

some nonconductive silicone lube should help, a little on your door seals/trunk seals also helps keep them from freezing iirc

Maybe it's an embarrassing car like a Kia Rio.

A friend also suggested to put the power antenna in the up position, and then cut the power for the winter.

Any thoughts? Is it a fuse that needs to be pulled?

should really just grease it...but if u cut the power then u wont have the radio...and i think the fuse controls more than just the antenna.

If you cut the power to it, should the antenna be up all the time, or down all the time? The radio should still work right?

if the antenna is down and u cut the power, it stays down and the opposite if antenna is up. radio should work but reception would be cut down drastically to the point where it statics so much that u dont want it on. my radio did that cuz i had no antenna and i hated it. thats when i went carpc .

reception won't really be affected. When its frozen, it barely comes up an inch, and reception is fine. In parking garages and stuff, there will be problems, I am willing to live with it.

So now the question is, how do you cut the power to the antenna?

find the 12V wire and cut it. but i would check what other things are contributed to the antenna fuse...owners manual?

You were right.......

Last night we had rain lots of it, then temps dropped, thus freezing rain. My beater Lexus that was parked outside, well the doors was completely frozen shut. Took 10 minutes to even open them.

Rest of the week also calls for freezing rain. For people who leave their cars outside at times, how do you deal with this?

Appreciate the help.

never had a fully frozen door but a semi one where a hard pull can open it. but sometimes on the doors i rarely use (ie. back doors, passenger door, and sometimes the trunk) it'll make a suction type sound. but living in NY with the cold *** weather, never had a door that froze up that much.
