Speedometer in LS400 stops working at times
I have a 95 LS400 and sometimes the speedometer stops working for short periods of time. I know there is no cable to change. I know there are VSS's. Does anybody know if you need to clean the electrical terminals on the VSS's? If not, do they just need to be replaced? Is one of them more problematic than the other?
Thanks,

This is apparently a very common problem on the early and mid-90's LS models.
My 93 LS started having tachometer and speedometer problems about two years ago. The problem normally occurs only during the warm months of the year. When I crank the car during these months, usually the tachometer does not move off zero. When I start driving, the speedometer also does not move off zero. I can usually get the tachometer working by rapping on the dash directly above the tachometer. Sometimes this also works with the speedometer. Usually the speedometer will spring to life after I have driven 20 miles or so. It will then work okay the rest of the day.
Most of the folks who do the repair work involving the non-illuminating dash units on these cars (Mr. Whizard, Jim Walker, et al) do not presently offer a fix for the tachometer and speedometer problems. One who does advertise that they can repair this problem is www.lexustech.com. However, they want $400.00 to do the repair. I will continue on rapping my dash top during the warm months until someone offers a reasonable repair cost.

In the first gens, replacement of the cluster will solve the problem, however in 95+ I’m not so sure what the problem is.

Why don't you try swapping out the cluster? That might be the culprit? Unless you want to pay $90+ for a diagnostics to "somewhat" get a general idea of what's going on. I'm sure you can find a used cluster for around that price. GL...

Call Jim Walker he fixes needles and clusters, also try tapping on top of the dash above cluster and that used to work on my 93 before it just completely died, so he sent me a complete needle/servo= gauge and i put it in cluster and it works fine now, and i have since had him send me a tach, and temp gage just to have them new so this wouldnt be a issue in a few months

THX. I will focus on the Vehicle Speed Sensors since they seem to be the cheapest alternative. It is annoying but since it happens rarely I can live with it. It stops working but for only short periods of time. If it cures the issue I will post the results.
