Want a smoother running engine?
then change the serpentine belt. PN Dayco 5060880 from advance autoparts for under $30. It's a 5 minute DIY job. All you need is a 14mm 1/2" drive socket and a long driver. You have to remove only the air intake box on the radiator for access with a 10mm socket. The routing diagram and instruction to turn the tensioner is on the hood. no adjustments are necessary. You don't need a helper, but it helps to have one. I did it without any help. What a difference from an old cracked squealing belt!!!

Well, the Part number and tools I quoted for the Dayco are for the 1UZFE engine, and the same belt tools and procedures worked on my Gen 1 and Gen 2 LS400s. I am certain the same procedure would apply to all Lexus engines, but maybe the sockets used and belt PNs are different.
ALL my squealing and hissing is gone!!!!!
Use the Dayco belt over the OEM style belts. It is better. As you can see from the photo on the partsamerica website, the Dayco belt has notches cut into it and this reduces the constant tension/compression in the belt, making the belt run smoother and extending its life. It ought to make the belt run cooler as well, PERHAPS reducing wear on the PS pump and other accesories, making them last longet. The last time I used a Dayco in my car (Infiniti), it lasted 6 years without wear and cracking and squealing.
Another tip: spray all the pulleys with WD40 and clean them with a toothbrush before installing the belt. Be sure all the WD40 is wiped dry or you may encounter slippage. Slippage, if any, will dissapear immediately as soon as the engine starts running.
Never use belt dressing on your belt!!! It is a useless product that only makes the belt stickier, starts hissing, and in fact makes it shrink and crack due to uneven tension and drying over a time period. This Dayco belt already has a chemical conditioner (probably some oil or mold release type product) built into the structure to keep it soft and pliable. DO NOT spray anything on it!!! Run it dry.

Hey ychachad,
On my car ('96 LS) I hear a VERY SOFT squealing/belt sound when the car is cold; it goes away within a minute or so. However, if the A/C is turned on the squealing gets much louder and only goes away after about 3 or 4 minutes of driving. The car still runs smoothly. Does this sound like a worn serpentine belt? If so I'll ask my mechanic to look at it when I take the car in for service tomorrow. Thanks for the maintenance tip!

Dayco
Dayco has lots of parts for the 1st generation LS.
Their site list:
Timing Belt 95190 ($46.63)
Serpentine Belt: 5060885 ($26.78)
The site list this part # as correct for a 94LS??
Tensioner Assembly: 89255 ($39.86)
Pulley: 89026 ($16.23)
Radiator Hose: Upper 81161 ( not found) , Lower 71538 ($11.68)
I did a cursory Web search and could not find these part #'s readily available to purchase?
What gives?

Had better luck at Planet Auto Parts. They show everything but an upper radiator hose.
163,000 & counting on the original belt. I do need to get this done!!

I agree, this is a very easy DIY that anyone can do. Here's how: http://www.lexls.com/drivebelt.html

Dayco Poly Clog
Just got a Dayco Serpentine belt in hand. It indeed does look a little more complex than a Gates belt for a 1 UZFE. How that translates to actual performance is anyones guess.

I bought the Dayco Serp. Belt , Pulley & Tensioner plus & Timing Belt from Jerry Gala at Planet Auto.

Price and service were great.

I know this is an old thread but I thought I would reply anyways.
Thats a great tip, most people tottaly forget about checking belts and if one snaps on the highway have fun hitch hiking!
Its so diffrent from my last car intrests. I have a Volvo 745 Turbo. Ya its a Volvo but it has potential. The forum that I go to for that rebuild entire engines in thier carport and some things are kinda shadetree mechanic. It's nice to see here that people are learning how to do stuff like changing belts, I think some stereotypes of Lexus owners are tottaly wrong. I thought you guys all went to dealers, j/k.
