Inop intermittent wipers
#2
Some owners have had problems understanding the operation of the LS460 windshield wipers when the car is new to them. I had some trouble when I first got my car. We don't see many windshield wiper problems so maybe a review of the instructions will help you.
Here is a link to a thread that explains operation of the windshield wipers on a 2007 LS460. I don't know if is pertinent to your car but maybe it will be helpful.

The rain sensing ("intermittent") wipers on the LS460 are a little different. When you switch them to auto, they will sweep once and sunsequently sweep dependent upon the optical sensor or the windshield (behind the rear view mirror). I am sometimes confused by how much rain on the windshield will trigger the wipers.
If the windshield was ever replaced with a non-OEM windshield, then all bets are off.

Have you tried using it when it's raining.
I have tried intermittent wipers from other makes like BMW, Infinity and Mercedes and found the ones on the LS to be the most precise for the amount of rain fall. If there is a slight mist from a fog it knows it.

I have the rain sensor on my 430 and it works very well as mentioned. I also have a Pilkington windshield due to a rock and it works as it should like new. If yours does not then look at the gel pad between the sensor and windshield. You can replace this part and of course make sure there are no obstructions on the glass itself.

Yes and no... at least for me. What frustrates me about the Lexus is that if you turn the engine on with the wipers set in auto and there's rain on the windshield, it won't sweep right away. I usually have to turn it off then on or drive a ways (blindly), before it sweeps. On my previous BMW and my current BMW, as soon as you turn the engine on, it does a sweep and carries on from there.
