Default Water Pump Leaking? How did the dealer know but I didn't

I've got a 07 LS460 with 95,000 on the ODO and took it in for a harsh ride. The tech called back and said the upper and lower control arm bushings are bad along with a water pump leak.

If the water pump is leaking, shouldn't I have known? I haven't had any low coolant issues, smells or fluid on the ground.

I'm covered by an extended service plan, but would like to have known (otherwise I could have gone bust!)

It all depends on how bad the leak is. I've seen some where there is no visible dripping or leaks where the car is parked, because it's not leaking when the car is off. It was only leaking while driving and the cooling system was at it's highest pressure. If you aren't seeing any drips though I would bet it's almost more like what you would see from a leaking shock absorber (visible moisture, but no actual fluid accumulation enough to drip). This means it is most likely just starting to leak.

Not necessarily. It could have been "weeping" so you wouldn't necessarily smell anything or see droppings in your driveway. I suppose they could make it up to get additional work, but since it is covered under warranty, it is not your responsibility to ask for a Lexus field rep to verify it.

I just had my water pump replaced a week ago at 50k miles. I found some coolant on the floor of my garage one day and made an appointment to bring it in but still drove it for a week and didn't see any more coolant on the ground. When I took it in they said it wasn't leaking anymore because the coolant had crystallized where the leak was. Also, even though I have the extended warranty they said it was covered under the powertrain warranty anyway so if you are still within this, you can get it fixed even if you are over the 4yr/50k warranty.

Mine was also "weeping" and had to be replaced at 37K. I have an extended warranty and it was covered 100%. As far as "making it up to get additional work"... because of the warranty, Lexus requires that the dealership submits a picture of a leaking part before it is approved.

Why do these people sit in waiting for us to do some major repairs before coming out of hiding just to total our cars!

Not being mean spirited, but when I read your post I got a good chuckle. It must be the way you wrote it. So its not my fault.
