Hmm, I'm just wondering why Lexus didn't use electronic door locks on the new LS but still use the good old rotary ****.

The electronic door lock I speak of is similar to that on the new Jetta and Passat. There's no physical interior lock. You just press the lock button and the door locks and the lock button is illuminated. To unlock, press the unlock side of the button (front doors unlock automatically via the door handle).

That setup is kinda...vague.

A good old button is still the best for some things. Just like how + - push button volume controls never really caught on.

The other problem with that is that in the case of an accident, there is a higher chance of getting stuck inside the car.

the accident part is what i am thinking too. when all power gone, what's there to control the use of door locks?

What is meant by rotary ****??? There are door handle lock latches on the LS since the 1st gen, the LS 460 adds a blinkie at the top for security...

I for one prefer a strong, mechanical lock--electrical inputs sound ok, but keep the mechanical components functional please.

It's true. That does look a bit futurisic. I've never seen it myself, so I'd like to check out myself one day.

If the electronic lock DOES fail, I'm sure they'll come up with a back-up manual lock.

What i meant was the use of physical manual buttons rather than electronic buttons like this:
rather than a turning button.

I know they'd have a backup, but why risk it and add the possibility.

basically the way the current lock is, it's rotary. rather then some sort of bottons (like your windows switch) with lock and unlock feature

You know there are cars that automatically unlock all the doors after a colllision and the airbags deploy. The new S-Class automatically lowers the windows just a bit to maintain a fresh supply of oxygen.

Jettas with electronic locks?? I havent been in the current Jetta's but I have been in the previous gen Jetta and the new Audi A3 which to an extent is a Golf and they all had pull up ***** on the window sill.

The **** becomes flush with the window sill when locked(automatic locking) and you cannot pull it up manually. However you can simply pull on the door handle and it unlocks at the same time as opening it. So there is still a manual way of unlocking the door. Its not fully electronic.

IMO I do not know how it would be legal to have an electronic only locking mechanism in any car. Just doesnt make sense. To me that is very unsafe.
