Of course I'm assuming here but, with the new tech advances I can't see the LS430 being able to go 7,500 and the LS460 only able to go 5,000 miles without having oil/service done.

Just the math alone tells you that if you go 7,500 miles every service compared to 5,000 miles a service in a 15,000 mile period that comes out to 2 services if you go 7,500 miles and 3 services if you go 5,000 miles per service. Extra money will sure be made by the dealers service department. I know, I know its preventative maintenance. That said, these cars should be able to take another 2,500 miles more before service. I think(I don't know) 7,500 is safe as long as you go in on or before 7,500 per service done!

Best bet is ask a mechanic and cant say if you'll get the typical sales pitch from a Lexus/Toyota service department that they give and all companies do to make more sales. I can here it now " we'll Mr.... you can go longer than 5,000 miles but we here at Lexus and all our dealerships recommend that 5,000 be done as the mileage you have service done, maybe 100-200 miles over give or take but, 5,000 nonetheless. That said, Mr... you can go 7,500 miles per service but, again we don't recommend it". Then you leave more confused than before.

I find in sales when this line is used its clear that 7,500 miles per service isn't bad to do. Why? If it was flat out not OK, wouldn't they say it and be firm on just 5,000 instead of saying we don't recommend it but, you can! Just a thought. People are so stuck on making money that there is a disconnect that actual peoples hard earned money is what pays for not so much needed work they ask for customers to pay for. Oh well, all the best guys and WISDOM may be the thing to use here. I'd go 6,000-6,500 miles to stay on the safe side if I wanted to stretch it out a bit more thaan 5,000 miles and not quite as long as 7,500 miles. L.G.N.M
i have frantz oil filters on both my lexus sc430 and my other car. You have to understand how the filtration system of your car works and also what a bypass filter does. your standard car paper filter only filters down to about 25 microns. the bypass filter by frantz filters the oil down to almost 1 micron. thats why your oil will always look new and clean. It actually is clean. and there is virtually no damage to the internal components from larger particles. the paper (toilet tissue) is almost 41/2 inches of tight dense cellulose material which does not break down as you would think like it would in its "usual" usage in the bathroom. It really is incredible to see. do some research before you knock it. I've had my oil lab tested after thousands of miles and its listed as almost new oil only a few trace elements of particles in same. I also have one on my transmissions and it does the same thing for that oil as well.

This is a hot topic around here, there's a lot of people that go 10k miles between oil changes using a high quality synthetic. In fact Toyota now recommends the 10k mile interval - and I know there's someone on here that posted an email from Lexus corporate that says it's ok to go 10k miles with the LS as long as you're using synthetic.

I'm old school and even 5k miles seems high to me, but others on here have convinced me I can go longer, so I am. Right now I'm at 8k miles using Mobil 1 EP (which supposedly is good for 15k miles). I plan on changing it soon...maybe at 9k...maybe at 10k.

The best solution is to send a sample into Blackstone labs, to get a understanding of how your engine is wearing and how long your oil can last.

Sorry if this was mentioned upthread, but if one had a warranty, does that require one to stick to the published maintenance schedule for their vehicle?

This thread prompted me to call my the local Lexus dealer and ask about oil change frequency.
I understand this has been discussed in great detail, but it goes to show you how informed/misinformed people at dealerships can be.
Or perhaps its not about being misinformed, they'd rather just go by the book, even though other options are possible.
He told me that in "early 2014", Lexus stated that, due to "new engine design", from '13 and up, the OCI is 10k. All other, older vehicles is 5k.
He also told me they don't do trans DnF, only flushes, the synth oil change for $90, rear diff is $140 (WOW) and plug changes are nearly $500!
Boy I tell ya! Thank God for this forum!

If you have a warranty, then yes, I would follow the published maintenance schedule, because they will hold that against you if something goes wrong.

For the most part the person you talk to at a dealer is a service writer and they generally know very basic stuff about cars...yeah you get some that have been techs, but for the most part they are sales people. Every service writer I ever worked with was misinformed regarding cars, they could talk a great game, but a lot of it just isn't correct.

Like the guy you talked to...the LS has a new engine design? News to me. What's new about it? Tighter tolerances? No, that wouldn't lend to longer oil change intervals. New heads? Different oil pump and sump? Different pistons and rings? These people crack me up, they really do.

While we are on the subject of oil changes and warranty; does anyone do their own changes while they have a warranty? I have the Lexus VSA 6 yr 100k, and I am on the fence whether to do it myself or not. What do you guys think in terms of warranty claims? Good or bad idea

I have my 460 serviced and oil changed about every 5,000 miles due to the fact that my 460 is still under warranty plus Lexus recommends. Once my warranty expires I will use full synthetic and have my oil changed around 8,000 miles.

Keep receipts, a log book with all the info (dates, mileage, etc). Shouldn't be an issue.

I don't know the name of the law, but manufactures are required by law to accept do your own maintance. But like posted above, you need to have documentation. As long as you can prove it, your just as good as paying the dealership

Did a quick search on the Google-ator and found the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act. That is the law I spoke of a above.

Thanks guys. 40,000 service was quoted 310.00, seemed high-oil change and inspection. With kids and college on the horizon, well you know. Thanks to all the DIY guys, and sharing your expertise!
