Default Found an aftermarket 16ohm 8" subwoofer. $20 free shipping.

8" sub with DVC in 8Ohm (Dual Voice Coil lets you run it up at 16Ohm) for $20.

Let me know what you think. Looks like there are only 2 left.

16 ohm?? that's what the factory sub runs at? weird!

16 ohm is what tube-type early stereo equipment used back in the 1950s!

For that kind of money, and with it running the correct impedance, you can't go wrong. Not sure how well it will reproduce lows when compared to the original ML sub..

Any dual voice coil 8 ohm speaker/woofer can be wired in series to achieve 16 ohm spec. Nothing special about this particular speaker in that regard.

The ML sub is rated at 14.5 ohm spec. Going with higher ohm speaker is safer on the amplifier than going lower ohm.

Good luck and let us know how it works out. There have been so many posts about replacing the original OEM sub with aftermarket but not many letting us know after a fair amount of time after how the system is holding up. Please keep us posted.

Forum member Mobius1 hip me to this one, it has a poly surround and looks of a better build....I received it yesterday but it arrived with a bent basket (damaged from shipping) so the seller is sending me another one.

Well, since you asked.... I replaced my original ML sub in my 2001 LS in June of '15 with an aftermarket JL Audio sub. It's been holding up fine and sounds very good. I could not use the original mounting bracket that fits on the ML, so I had to screw it directly into the package shelf. Not exactly what I wanted to do, but it worked and the sub sounds fine. There are some songs that I listen to that have more bass response than others and it can cause a slight buzz in the package shelf, so I find myself adjusting the bass setting between some songs.

Now, when I'm in my 2005, with the original sub which is in perfect condition, I can genuinely hear the difference between the two speakers. The sound reproduction is much better with the original speaker, VS. the aftermarket sub in my other car.

. Thanks for the input. That's pretty much what I expected. Another reason we pay premium prices for OEM.

I just replaced the foam surround with cloth from these guys:

http://www.simplyspeakers.com/toyota...n-clsk-8m.html

if the voice coil is good in the speaker (mine was, the foam had just disintegrated) then it's a fine option. A bit of a PITA to get all the foam off but sounds like new.

I'm curious how different the ML OEM and my Dayton SD215A-88 are, I've never got a good chance to hear the ML sub as it was deteriorated when i purchased the vehicle. I'm almost intrigued enough to re-foam it and compare them now...

I considered installing an aftermarket DVC 8-ohm, 8" sub in my '01. IIRC, the JL Audio speaker was one of the subwoofers recommended. While I hoped an after-market sub would sound better than OE, my hesitation was exactly what you state - it wouldn't sound as good as OE - which as many have said, the OE isn't the best anyway. So, I just re-foamed the OE sub.

It would be great if there was an after-market 8" DVC 8-ohm subwoofer that could be proven to provide better low frequency sound than the OE ML sub. As a starting point, we don't have the ML subwoofer sound characteristics, parameters and data as a reference point for comparison to after-market subs.
