Front cabin a/c filter
My alert message came on to change my A/C filter. I have a base model so I believe I only have one a/c filter in the glovebox. Is it necessary to get the filter from the dealer or would any aftermarket filter do the trick? Do you guys go for the carbon filter or just the paper one? What's the going price? $15-$20? Thanks all.

You can buy a replacement filter at autoparts store for about half the cost of Lexus filter. I like the idea of the carbon filter - not sure it actually is better. I take mine out and clean it by brushing and vacuuming with my shop vac every 2-3 months - takes 10 minutes max. If you clean it every 2-3 months the same filter will likely last for years.

I was wondering.........Is the replace A/C message triggered by mileage or the actual sensing of blockage? If it is mileage, aren't there times it doesn't need replacement?

most of the "sensors" of filters are just dummy monitors. They are not monitoring performance or such, purely based on mileage and when reset.
As for OEM or aftermarket, for something like cabin filter, which is not critical for anything mechanical, I'd say aftermarket is fine.

The charcoal/carbon layer on the OEM filters may provide an additional air purifying/odor-removing benefit over aftermarket filters that don't have the charcoal layer.
I use OEM filters. Bought enough to last a few years from an online supplier who had the lowest price to my door at the time.
From the 2002 manual: "After replacing, push and hold the 'OFF' button for the front air conditioning for about more than 4 seconds to reset the corresponding data."

And kudos to the Lexus designers who made the cabin filters - both front (and rear if you have a UL) - absolutely trivial for anyone to replace. Some cars' filters are a nightmare.

The local Lexus dealer had the nerve to ask $44 for the OEM filter. I found a site on line selling OEM Lexus parts asking $24 for the same filter. The Lexus dealer would not match it but a local Toyota dealer did. For those interested, the Toyota part# is 87139-YZZ01 The old filter I took out had plenty of crap on it.
