Does the LS430 really drive all that better than the 98-00 LS400?

An 85 yr/old lady t-boned my 2000 LS400 a couple of months ago and I replaced it with a 2002 LS430. The 430 rides far better, but that may be a function of being 2 years newer and having 90,000 less miles. Performance-wise, they are about the same, but the 400 seemed to respond to throttle input quicker (drive by wire on the newer car?). The steering in the 430 feels heavier, but on the other hand, the steering in the 400 is pinkie finger light.
The biggest letdown by far is the much crappier standard radio in the 430. I liked the audio system in the 400 (also standard) enough to not to anything to it to improve the sound. Why did Lexus downgrade the system so much?
